How to combine (= cross-list) courses in Canvas | ![]() |
Home > How to combine... |
GT's Canvas Support Team (separate from tech support from Canvas) has implemented a tool to combine (Canvas calls this "cross-listing") courses. You can get to the tool by following the Canvas Help link:
If you are combining Section UA (on-campus GT students) with Section QUP (off-campus GT SOUP students), be careful which section you select as the primary section to which other sections are cross-listed (combined). The Canvas home page template used for the primary section is used for the combined sections. Before you combine courses, examine which course tools are available on the left side of your Canvas home page. In general, if Tool A is accessible only in Section X, and Tool B is accessible only in Section Y, after combining sections, students (and perhaps instructors) can see Tool A but not Tool B. The instructor can confirm this by switching to "Student View" within Canvas.
Specifically, a course tool "Proctortrack" (PT: automatic online proctoring program) is accessible only to students in Section QUP (a subaccount of GTPE's QUP), not in Section UA (a subaccount of IAC). A course tool "Blackboard Collaborate" (BC) does not show up in Section QUP. When combining Sections QUP and UA, in order to take advantage of PT for QUP students, Section QUP needs to be the primary section and Section UA needs to be merged into QUP. After combining Section QUP as the primary section, the link to BC will be lost in the combined course.
If BC is needed after it is gone from the combined course, the instructor needs to add this link manually. Make sure to copy the BC guest link in Section UA and save it somewhere BEFORE you combine the sections. If you forget to do this, you need to uncombine the course in order to find the URL guest link to BC. See "Tips for launching a virtual classroom" for more information on this.
Canvas courses and GTPE-generated courses (LANG-XXXX) cannot be combined. Normally, GTPE creates guest GT accounts for the LANG students. The instructors can then manually add LANG students by using their GT email addresses through the "People" tool of Canvas.
If you have further questions on this, write to canvas@gatech.edu (GT's Canvas tech support team) about BC accessibility. You can write to fatimah@pe.gatech.edu to ask about PT accessibility. When you are emailing, to refer to your course accurately, copy and paste the URL of the home page of the Canvas course in question that appears in your browser's URL window within the ticket filing just in case. (FYI: This Canvas site URL looks like "https://gatech.instructure.com/courses/45332".) After your sections are combined, read "9. After cross-listing, tie loose ends" below.
If you would like to combine courses manually by yourself using Canvas functionality instead of using the GT tool, please read the following. |

Canvas Help page explains how to cross-list (= merge) courses here (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10885-4214719646). T-Square had specialized Instructor Help menu to do this, but in Canvas, you need to do this by yourself manually. Cross-listing must be completed before you publish your sections to be cross-listed.
Identify two course sections to be cross-listed (primary and secondary sections). The primary section is the original section to which the secondary section is cross-listed (= merged with).
Go to the "Home" page of the primary section and find its course ID. The course ID is the last number within the URL shown when you click on the "Home" button of a course in Canvas. Copy this number into the clipboard. FYI: Course ID is not the same as "SIS ID."
Go to the "Home" page of the secondary section and click on the "Settings" link at the bottom of the tools.
On the Settings page of the secondary section, click on the "Sections" tab.
On the Sections page of the secondary section, click on the section link which looks like a URL.
On the subsequent page, click on the "Cross-List this Section" button on the far right.
Within a pop-up window, enter (paste) the course ID of the primary section you copied above, into the second field labled "Enter the Course's ID" and hit the Enter key. If the primary section is found, it will show up below the field. If this is correct, click on "Cross-List This Section" button. FYI: If you use "SIS ID" instead of Course ID of the primary section, enter it into the "Search for Courses" field (first field), not into the "Enter the Course's ID" field (second field).
If cross-listing is successful, you will see the following message in green.
To confirm this cross-listing, go back to the Home page of the primary section, open its Settings page and click on "Sections" tab to see the cross-listed courses as shown below.
After combining (= cross-listing) sections, the course code (= course title that appears in Dashboard and at the top of the home page) remains as that of the primary section. For example, if you combine (= cross-list) section JAPN 1001-UA into the primary section JAPN 1001-QUP, the course title remains as "JAPN 1001-QUP" even though the combined course has both QUP and UA students. You may want to change this course code within the "Settings > Course Details" page so the students will be able to see their section designation (e.g., "JAPN 1001-QUP → "JAPN 1001-QUP/UA"). Having an inaccurate course code does not affect the functionality of the course in Canvas, but students may become concerned if they don't see their own section name in the course code.
There is a way to check which section students have registered for. Go to the "People" tab (or "GaTech Roster" tab) and select "Student" from the "All Roles" dropdown menu. Section labels appear under the "Section" heading next to each stduent name pointed with a red arrow below.
